It won the Jury Prize at Cannes; a riot nearly resulted when the best actress award went to Virna Lisa (who portrays Margot's mother, Catherine de Medici) instead of to Adjani. This film is a lavish production, using the bloody 16th century struggle between French Catholics and Protestants as backdrop. It is a top-notch historical epic featuring impeccable costumes and grand scenery. There is more action and less talk than one expects in French films, which makes sense given the events of the period. Six days after the marriage of Margot and Henri comes the Saint Bartholomew's Day massacre, an event that sees the wanton slaughter of more than 50,000 Protestants.
