Trintignant (A Man and a Woman) stars as Jean-Louis, a devout Catholic who moves to a provincial town. There he meets Francoise (Marie-Christine Barrault, Cousin, Cousine), who he believes is his perfect match, and vows to marry her. Somehow, though, he ends up spending a night with a sexy divorcee, Maud (Francoise Fabian). Witty dialogue and Rohmer's vision create one of the most brilliant comedies about adult indiscretions ever made. This film earned a nomination for an Academy Award for best foreign film. The frequent references to Pascal and the laws of probability make for a very intelligent look at an age-old question: what can make a "good" person do "bad" things?
