This film allows the viewer to imagine what someone else's life is like, by showing many aspects of Lara's life and not just a handful of plot points. You'll see moments where Lara has to negotiate at the bank for her parents, where she translates what's on the television for her and mistranslates what the teacher says at parent-teacher conferences. Lara's life changes when her aunt gives her a clarinet. She studies seriously and eventually wishes to attend music school. Her father is opposed (in a flashback, you can see why he wishes to have nothing to do with the clarinet). Lara now has to decide between her past and her family, and her own desires. This wonderful film received a 1998 Best Foreign Film Oscar nomination. It also earned an assortment of other nominations and awards around the world.
